There are two statements that I love. One is when someone states 'they are holding it together.' It visions a life that has a goal of outright serenity in which chaos and growth are messy. Of course they are messy! Yet they are part of the growth. We keep forgetting we are always on the path no matter where it goes.
The second statement is around how we live. There is the content of life versus the context of life.. The content for me is when we are in the midst of experiencing the process. However, I also believe that it is important that we stop aside now and then. This then is the context; we step away from the experience to look at it from the outside. We step away from the path to look at the path. Both parts are important in making adjustments to our journey of life.
Where am I? On the human part of my journey during my short time on this planet it is important for me to orient myself. This means I must check in to see how I stand in relation to everything.
This is something that my wife and I do often. We stop (often in precious conversations deep in the middle of the night) and ask the question 'how are we doing?' It gives us the opportunity to look around where we stand with each other and it is the perfect place to have wonderful feedback. It is a great place to make those tiny little adjustments of life. When a commercial airline is flying from Los Angeles to New York this is one of the adjustments that occur. The airline continually makes adjustments after checking to see where it is on the journey.
A minister I know mentioned that the God Positioning System is very different than the GPS system of today. True, it is about navigation. But it is up to us to determine the landmarks around us that let us know where we are. We tend to forget part of the Divine package is our own personal GPS system. It comes with a feature that allows us to connect with our true north. It is the inner compass but we must use our password or gate to enter it.
One of the things that make this so difficult is all the many distractions that are all around us. There is always something to do that will take us down a rabbit hole. Sometimes it takes effort to connect through the use of one of our spiritual practices.
So I urge everyone to take some time to step off the path and look to determine where you are. Just the act of doing this allows you to see with a bit more clarity your direction. Our direction can be so easily blown by the winds of change and distraction without even noticing. Take your time and instead of asking "what's going on?" ask instead "Where am I?"
When we orient the map then the driving directions of life will become so much easier!
