What If?

One of the most interesting science fiction stories I've read takes place in a mythical future. The world is a chaos-filled mess. There is no collaboration or compromise and it is always "us vs. them" throughout the world in so many ways. There is no future that gives humankind any hope. Then it happens.

It starts out small. A radar station in the outback of Australia reports getting strange radio signals that seem to show there are others in the universe. Other intelligent beings and it appears they are coming to visit. Soon other reporting agencies from across the planet providing more information. People start to wonder about these aliens.

An unmanned spacecraft sent out a few years earlier is redirected so that it can make contact - some light years away. The world stops for a moment as the scheduled meeting and contact due to occur. The day comes and suddenly the news takes a turn. The Earth representative is destroyed by the aliens.

A curious change occurs. All the different factions on Earth realize they must join together; they must set aside their differences and start preparing a united defense of the planet. New spectacular innovations are discovered by the best minds working together to save Earth. At the same time a new food type is discovered which will feed the entire planet. New irrigation methods appear to turn deserts into full green fields for crops and parks.

It is now four years later. The aliens are due in one year. The world now has one government serving all and daily there are new discoveries to provide for all people. The world appears ready to defend the planet.

At that point, a woman journalist discover twin brothers working in a secret facility. She finds that the brothers have manufactured the entire program of aliens approaching with evil intent. They felt if the Earth had a common enemy, everything would change.

I'm ready! I think I may have heard of a place in Australia that is getting radio signals from far away that appear to be alien. Please??
