There are little visions that are given to us all through the day. I was in sales for a number of years and had to travel to Reno to supervise our branch office. Then I would go through Carson City to Tahoe to check in with customers in the casinos. On the highway between the two cities, there stood a man on most days. He was an older man who must have been retired. He sat in a chair with a walker nearby and he waved as the cars went by. I came to depend on his wave to add balance to my day and know everything was good.
These are the visions that pop up in our lives. I believe it is a part of each of us being totally authentic and no matter what life has provided our spirit is filled with a kind of resilience. This resilient part of us knows more than we think.
My cousin is one such vision. She doesn't recognize herself in this description. She is just someone who shows up. Every week she makes visits to people to check in with them. They may be neighbors or friends with health challenges or in the hospital or just alone. My mother spent her last year in Minnesota to be near friends. She was in a facility and had a few visitors who were old friends, My cousin visited her every week just to connect and make sure she had family. This is how she shows up and we all give thanks for that. She recognizes everyone's birthday or anniversary or graduation and accordingly sends a card to let us know she is thinking of them.
I have another friend that served on our church board with me years ago. He is another vision keeper. Each week he has lunch with an old, old friend with dementia. He loads the wheelchair and they go to a restaurant and share thoughts. "I enjoy his company and I'm his friend."
These are the people who serve the spirit of life. They are in the same category as all the emergency workers who run to danger to help. It is what you do because this is a community and we are not alone. Community and connection are a part of their daily lives.
I give thanks and blessings for these people. We can't always recognize them for they do their work without any expectation of thanks or recognition. It is who they are. I look for these unwritten warriors and recognize them.
We all have these people in our lives. Look around and you will realize that there's one and there's one and you didn't even know it.
Spot one today? Make a friend for these are the people to value in our lives.
