The Handyman

The world is always filled with very special people. They have come to be authentic and in doing so, change other people. This particular group of people are impossible to define. I know what they do, but I am not quite sure why it is they do what they do.

My father was one of those people. When he went to visit people he would 'do' things. He did not bring home presents, he would do handyman tasks.

During the last twenty years of his life, he made an annual trip to visit my sister and her family. For him, every trip had a task list of things to do. I just called my sister to get a list of items that he did. He put in a new water heater, re-did all the electrical panels in the house, put in new stairwell railings, and helped put in a new deck. These were just the things that she remembered quickly. She will add more through the next weeks.

The interesting part for me is that this was just a part of his DNA. He loved doing this and it gave him value. He didn't feel it was an imposition or a burden. It was work he did so he could show up and visit. He did the same thing every time he visited my Aunt, and we are reminded every time of his work when we hit the remote control button on her drapery controls.

This came about because of the following. I ran a large construction company but I was not hands-on. I was the man that could work the projects and get people to do the work - just not do it myself.

So we have handyman tasks building up around our house. Meanwhile, my wife's daughter has a husband who is hands-on. In addition, he does have the DNA to do the extra work around the house. Today he was present in our house and performed some miracle adjustments that make such a difference in a couple different places in our house. He also has some other projects he wants to do, and they are things we need to get done!

It's a miracle, and I give thanks that he has the same DNA that my father had. He wants to do it and I look forward to getting some important things fixed around the house that will make a difference.
