There are things in the modern world that confuse me. I just don't understand them.
When we were growing up, famous people were famous for a reason. They might be a revered sports figure; they might be a well-known actress; or they might be a politician we've seen in the newspaper.
But the internet has produced an entirely new kind of famous. It is being famous for being famous. It ranges from reality shows like the Kardashians (who are these people and how did this happen?) It is the advertising that features an All-American gymnast that I had never heard of. This week alone her ad has played 30 times and I can't get her out of my sight. How did this happen? Who decided she was the one?
But then comes the social group that I am not a part of. Their existence confuses me. They are the social influencers of the world. These are the people who have built up a huge following who follow their every word.
I think the first requirement of this group is that they have to live with no privacy. They are on-line at all times. But just look at some of the lives they have created.
There is a couple who basically travel the world and share their experiences on-line with their followers. Recently they spent a day at the most expensive hotel room in Las Vegas. I think the room was almost $10,000 a night. I can only surmise that they made a presentation offering this on-line influence and the hotel let them experience it. The two-floor suite had a butler and catered meals along with a pool room, The video they put together was spectacular. This is what they do all year long. They take a long plane flight in premium class with sleeping arrangements.
There are all levels of social influencers and many of them make less sense than others. Recently a social influencer die. Her presentation was to show up around the world at majestic spots and film herself in a bikini. Unfortunately she chose a location that was so cold that she actually froze to death.
I end up with many questions. How does one choose this career? Is there a college that offers classes or even more amazing a degree in being an influencer? It seems like whatever the degree, it must be unique. I know some of the influencers use shock in their presentations.
So this is something I am not putting much energy into because it is just too confusing. Rather I think I will spend time with some quiet music and meditation and be grateful that I was a bab boomer. My favorite t-shirt states "I may be old but I got to see all the great bands."
