I recently noticed a trend which suddenly is everywhere. It is so subtle and it may be a marketing ploy of the greatest magnitude, or it might be a plea of inanimate objects to be more human, or it might be my very overactive imagination.
About three or four years ago, our dishwasher expired. It had been trusty and well-working for over ten years. We found out this is a normal lifetime for a dishwasher according to engineering standards.
We got a brand new beautiful dishwasher. We discovered when it finished it's job with a load of dishes, an upbeat and bright little song would play which would evoke a 'thank you' from me. It only seemed right.
Then last year we got a new washing machine and a new dryer. We discovered that they also 'sing' when they work. Both sing when they get started and sing when they finish their job. In listening one day, we identified a few other little songs being played by our appliances.
What provoked some design engineer to suddenly put an upbeat little ditty into the working of a home appliance? How does it make a difference? Are these appliances forming some kind of 'book'' club during which they discuss their humans and the thing they might do as they inhabit our universe?
I'm up in the middle of the night often and it is downright creepy to hear them singing to each other. I wonder if there is an accepted play list of songs that the appliances can sing? I wonder if somewhere there is a composer writing songs for kitchen appliances in D minor with key changes and harmonies. My thoughts can go to scary places.
All I know is that our household is now a cacophony of noises purporting to be music and they all seem to be replying to each other.
How can we slow down to do spiritual meditation and have moments of silence if the dryer is singing to the blender? What will the new ovens be like? I can't wait to see this trend of change.
I wonder what kind of dreams the design engineers have around appliances. No wait, I'd rather not know. Excuse me, I hear my dishwasher calling me. I must go..............
