Seeing The Light

Updated: Oct 13, 2023

As I've shared previously in my blog, I am often up at night working on various projects in our computer room. I love our computer room! The window looks out upon our backyard garden which has been designed and kept up by my beloved who loves to work in the yard. In addition, we've set up really effective work spaces. We each have our work stations on opposite walls so that we sit back to back. Both our stations have shelves filled with binders filled with all the projects we are presenting to the world.

But it brought me to another kind of light the other night. I came in and had not turned on the light; I realized the room was like the background in a jungle scene. It was as if I was sitting at the fire lighting up our area and looking out into the dark. Then I realized the dark was filled with a number of eyes of creatures looking into the fire area.

However in the case of the computer room, all the lights were monitors and feedback that various electronic items in the room were working. I stopped for a moment and counted some 15 lights in the room - some at battery backups, some at routers, some at printers, and on it went.

It gave me confidence and comfort that all my ducks were in a row. I was ready to go.

One of my oddities is that I love a blank writing pad, college lined only. I love each blank pad so much that I am addicted to buying a packet of six every time I go to the office store. Unfortunately this means my office supply drawer is filled with blank pads. So I've taken control of that addiction (Hi, I'm Dave and I am a blank writing pad addict!) and now we have a reasonable amount of pads. Yet here we go again as I keep adding tools to make sure everything in the office is working. I have four surge protectors protecting things along with battery back-ups. I need to take a look at that.

I then remembered my blog on our appliances that sing to each other and was reminded that throughout our house there are set-ups to provide noise feedback that things are working. We have a reminder bell in our office that started to remind us of something about a year ago. we still have not traced where the bell originates from and what it is notifying us about. Every once in a while we go on a fact finding mission and have not found this bell's origin.

Thus our house is filled with feedback to make sure we are plugged in, to make sure we can communicate with the world. I wonder how many of us spend the same amount of time giving feedback through cards, phone calls, and visits with our family and friends to maintain communication? It is part of that journey to not isolate and try to do it alone. Make sure your night lights to friends and family are shining brightly!
