In the reading adventure of my life, I discovered fantasy very early. My brother and I were big fans of the "Lord of the Rings" series. My brother even went as far as to learn to speak Elfish from the book with a lot of background work. We both started with J. R. R. Tolkien's the Hobbit and followed up with that series. This of course led to C. S. Lewis and the Narnia Series about four children during World War II who became reluctant heroes in saving a fantasy world.
Each of these books spoke of worlds filled with magic and mythical creatures who made a difference. It spoke of lands where miracles still occurred and where anything could happen.
I'm sorry I still believe that truth. I believe that the world is filled with magic and miracles and it is just the fact that we often miss them when they occur.
In March of 2015 Lynn Groesbeck was in a terrible automobile accident in Utah. She died on impact and the car became partially submerged in an icy river. Some fourteen hours later rescuers heard an adult voice yelling "Help Me!" When they got to the car they found 18-month old Lily hanging just above the frigid water. No logical explanation...
Yet we do not have to look that deeply to see the miracles of life; they are ever-present. Stop and think about the narrow band width around the atmosphere that produces just the proper gasses that allow the human race to survive on this planet. We are constantly reminded of such miracles as we go through the protocol of making possible adjustments for the climate changes that are occurring.
There is a wonderful quote from Sister Barbara Hance that states, "Show me a day when the world wasn't new!" The quote shows the image of a child gazing out a window at a baby bird standing on a window sill. That is the truth of life. Every single day of our lives we will always see things for the very first time. Can we recognize the miracle in that?
Unfortunately mankind can easily get caught up on the side of the equation around the routine of life, the sameness of our days. Life becomes uniform when we see it that way. But it is only because we are putting boundaries and edges on our views. There is so much for us to see as long as we widen and expand our experience.
I took a class on Awe which pointed out the truth that today we will have new experiences but we must be open to bringing these experiences into full consciousness.
See the new things today and speak of them. Stop at precious moments and point out the differences which are about the diversity of it all. What an adventure!
