This week we went through one of the transitions of life. Our refrigerator of five years had a meltdown. We discovered there are two fans in a refrigerator. The first cools the freezer and keeps it at a temperature of zero degrees. The second fan blows the cool air in the freezer to the upper chamber and keeps the temperature at thirty-seven degrees. The second fan failed so we replaced it. Unfortunately the replacement fan (right out of the box!) did not work. When the repairman came back to find the replacement fan failure he discovered something else. The motor control board was also going out. We surrendered and decided to let go of the old refrigerator. Off we went to buy a new one.
Now we had a back-up. When I moved into my duplex in 1998 I was very tight on money. So I went to a second-hand appliance store on Auburn Blvd. that stocked used refrigerators and bought a used one for fifty dollars. Fifty dollars and it still works beautifully after twenty-six years. So we had transferred all our stuff from the failed unit to the old garage unit.
We got the new one ordered and it was delivered today. Rachel and I were amazed at the delivery team. Their names were Will and Phil (no, really!) and watching them switch out the two appliances was a great adventure. First of all we were asked to measure to make sure all our openings would work. We measured and it appeared everything was good except the front door. The old refrigerator width was 35" and the door opening was 33" with the door on. However we forgot Will and Phil do this for a living.
First they showed up at 5 PM (originally scheduled between 1-5 PM) having made 9 deliveries before ours. They immediately got a door popper which was a tool to take off the door hinges. This happened quickly and they set the door aside.
They prepped the new refrigerator and brought it into the house. The new one is only 30" wide so there were no clearance issues. They then took the handles off the old refrigerator and did an amazing dance. Each hooked up a neck harness and attached it to the unit. They then stepped back and lifted the refrigerator into the air. They then did a most beautiful dance/walk and proceeded to walk out of the house with the huge old unit. It was so much easier than using a hand truck and took so little time. We were astounded! They then used the same harnesses to walk the new unit into it's new home.
It took so little heavy lifting but this was the case of a team of two professionals who knew what they were doing and had been doing it for a long time. Off they went to their last delivery - and all tend deliveries done on a day with a temperature of 106 degrees.
Thank you gentlemen for showing up and doing your job with elegance and grace. It was easy-peasy! It really wasn't but boy did they make it look that way..........adventures are everywhere!
