Quirky

Each of us show up in the world with quirky habits. Today I want to talk about the quirky way we approach our food.

I have a food issue that requires me to have my food intake be totally balanced. Each time I have two or more food items, my food intake must be balanced. This means if I am eating meat and other items, there must be a balance. This is a pure confession. It is impossible for someone to notice it, yet I have found that we all have some kind of food intake that belongs just to us.

When I was growing up there was a period of time in our house when my brother ate onions just like apples. I mean to the point of my mother getting a bag of onions to keep in the refrigerator so he could have a constant supply. I thought that was one of the strange things I saw. It concerned my mother to the point that she took him to the doctor. The doctor gave him a total physical and ran some tests. The doctor sat down with my mom and said all the results were normal. It was something in my brother's body that needed what was being provided by the onions. But it was strange!

It runs in our family!

My cousin - as he was growing up - only ate one kind of food - mashed potatoes! That was it on a constant basis. It did not matter what other food was in a meal - my cousin only wanted mashed potatoes! My Aunt and Uncle had some of the same concerns that my mother had about my brother eating onions, so they checked him out and he eventually changed his eating habits.

Finally there is one other weird approach I have to food. It seems to compare to astrology because I have found it in other places. I have some friends who are also Geminis. They run the same approach. I have the ability to eat a particular kind of food for years and years. I've just gotten off a kick to eat open-faced turkey sandwiches with gravy. I believe that that was my restaurant order over and over again for almost 10 years. There is a restaurant in Sacramento that had it on the menu as their favorite dish. All I had to do was walk in the front door and by the time I got to my table the order was ready. Then about three months ago it the dish changed and I haven't had it since. Something else takes its place for a while. I worry that I am getting into a rut but it's more a comfort for me. Food feeds me (what else would it do?)

What is it that feeds your inner hunger? How does it do so? What makes it different?
