Miracles

For a number of years in my exploration of faith traditions, I became a member of the church often referred to as Mormons. I was dating a Mormon woman and the bishop of her ward (much like a Catholic parish priest) asked to meet with me. He was concerned because I was not Mormon and she had four children. He asked me to take the lessons from the missionaries and then decide. He strongly urged me to convert so our family could be together for eternity.

I joined in my typical low-key way with a resounding yes. I became a Mormon and within a year I was in the Young Men's presidency and teaching adult Sunday school. But enough of the background.

One quiet evening (as quiet as possible with four kids in the house) I was doing research for my Sunday school class. The topic was going to be around miracles. I suddenly realized that in the Mormon faith the miracles keep on coming. What a huge affirmation of something I already believed! For there are some faith traditions that teach that the miracles are done and in the past.

I'm reminded of the floods in the 1980's in Sacramento. Men of our ward were out helping sand baf homes of our congregants who needed help. They were working across from American River College one Saturday afternoon with the river due to crest later in the day. More flooding was expected. They were just finishing up with their sand bagging when the leader of the group realized the house next door seemed empty. Yet he was strongly moved to go over and knock on the door. It wasn't logical; it was time to go home and be with family. He asj=ked in silent prayer what would God have him do? He had a sense of urgency as he went next door and knocked. After a few minutes had passed, a very frail elderly woman answered the door. He asked if he and his team could help. She burst into tears. She had been praying all morning for God to help her protect her home and now here was her answer. The team proceeded to take a couple hours and totally sand bag the house. Prayer works!

Miracles are occurring all the time and again it is up to us to recognize them. God provides the miracles in situations when things seem the darkest. Sit back and accept the flow as spirit fills us. When we pray it is not up to us to figure out how to do it. It is only putting our concerns into the hands of the Great Resolver. When we finish a miracle, our only response is a "WOW!"

Miracles happen with such an ease that it leaves us in that place of wonder and awe.

When I see my last six months of health challenges, I am humbled that spirit has stepped in and provided me with the things I needed to stay alive and heal. It's a miracle...........
