Today I watched an elderly Paul Simon singing "The Sounds Of Silence" from his heart. He sang it with passion in a startling different arrangement.
I finished listening to it and I sat with tears in my eyes. The question which came up for me (and I hope it will for you) is "How did we get here?" I also want to phrase it "How did we end up here?"
We came here and our parents taught to live life the right way. Get an education to get a job. Save for a house and raise a family. Take each day and live it. Worship at a church.
But somewhere in the midst of it all something happened. We added "speak our truth" and "speak our voice." We helped blow up the world and highjack it from our parents. We did it through protests and music. We got to see all the great music and hear the voice of change in the magicians who wrote their statements in music.
It started small with :Blowin' in the Wind." Soon it was full blown with "For What It's Worth" anf "Give Peace a Chance" and "Ohio." "We Shall Overcome" became an anthem. The number one song requested by the soldiers in Vietnam was "We Got To Get Out Of This Place."
So I go back to reminiscing about the twists and turns of my life line. I decided I am going to take a blank piece of paper and write down what I consider to be the milestone choices in my life - just to look at. I suggest you do so also. This exercise gives us a chance to see what was and is important to us. Take your time with this. Take thirty days to finish it and then pick someone that is close and present it to them. Talk about it. You will be amazed at what you learn about you.
This is one of the ways we balance and ground our life. This is one ways we become more self-aware. You will notice this will make a difference.
It is also time to get over yourself. It has been said it is so important to come to the end of your life with no regrets, such is life. We took the steps we took and we have always been on our path.
It is so easy to dismiss parts of our life because we didn't make the "right" decision. It is what it is and it is one of the ways you ended right here thus answering the question I raised back at the start of this piece..........
Great blog. I'm going to do the exercise you suggested. I might be pleasantly surprised about some of my choices, yet NOT be too happy with some! But hopefully learned from both good and "bad."
