I remember when I was a teenager in the late 1960's. The older 'responsible' adults were always ruing the fact that the youth were taking the world into hell. I was reminded of a famous man who once said, "I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly disrespectful and impatient of restraint." I give people a chance to guess who the speaker was on this quote. Was it John Kennedy? Was it Eisenhower? No it was Socrates from the golden age of Greece! The more things change, the more things stay the same.
I bring that up because of how different being a teenager is today in comparison from my youth. It is not a major big deal for the youth to have been arrested somewhere along the way or to have been present during acts of crowd violence.
The youth of today don't own a lot of cars because they have a ride service.. So at any time they will call a phone number and a stranger comes to pick them up and take them where they want to go. I keep on realizing this is a very easy way to get places but I still am somewhat resistant to get the Uber app on my phone and try out the process.
In this world, I find we must keep learning new things just to keep up. I have a strong curiosity about how the world works. Yet I will be watching television and I realize after a commercial plays I don't even know what the product was about on the commercial.
My mind is boggled by the fact that we have some 300 programs of different types of television to watch. When I was younger, the word binge-watching hadn't even shown up. Now when we find a new series we will binge-watch it until we have seen all of the episodes.
We just finished discovering and binge-watching "Bluebloods". In fact, this is not even limited to American shows. We will watch a Swedish detective series along with programs from Eastern Europe. This shows us the cultural differences between each of us and at the same time reflects the sameness in all os us.
Yet it still goes back again to one basic fact. These are all distractions that keep our minds busy and learning and growing. But we forget that we are whole and complete and our Divine side is totally grounded.
It is about recognizing each other during these moments. I set the intention each day of knowing when the clue comes before me and I suddenly realize everything I see is magic filled with spirit and the truth of God. Look again!
