Friendly?

Updated: Dec 27, 2023

Sometimes I really believe it's just because we're standing in the right line. Somewhere long ago when I was preparing to come to the Earth plane there were lines to pick up pieces of who we were going to be. I definitely got into the right line in terms of my default process.

I definitely have always believed that the answer to the prime Einstein question "Is this a friendly universe?" for me is hell, yes it is. In my life, I have said yeS and taken steps that I had no right to do and yet the universe has taken such beautiful care of me.

I've told the story of moving to Australia after a couple dates with a girl. But then we decided to go ahead and 'hitchhike' back across the South Pacific with no deadlines. This was in the 1970's and the South Pacific was still recovering from the hippie invasion. In places like Tahiti, in order to land on the island, it was required to have a reservation at one of the local hotels. The island was done with beach dwellers who came and never left.

So we sent trunks to the United States ahead of us and put our entire lives on our backs with huge backpacks. Each pack was in the 50 pound range and mine included our tent. We 'knew' we could go anywhere and do anything.

We took off from Melbourne, Australia Christmas Eve with plans to land in Auckland and spend a week before moving on. We were young and my girlfriend was blond-haired and blue-eyed with a big smile. People wanted to help us. We ended up spending almost five months in New Zealand, much of it in Auckland. We found a beautiful KOA type campground that had our campsite overlooking one of the big harbors for a while. We got to know the owners of the campground and even went so far as to place our three time a week milkman order for milk, cheese, bread, and other staples.

Each morning we would lock everything up and take our carry bags and explore. Since this was the first part of the journey, we held ourselves to one solid meal a day and found some real bargains. We even found a place that sold authentic American hamburgers which were served with a fried egg and an authentic American milkshake which only had one scoop of ice cream.

There were times that the rains would come hard and we had to dig against the drainage so the water would run away from the tent. We discovered the local branch of the library was always open so when heavy rain was forecast we would end up at the library.

After some time, the librarians found out we were Americans and adopted us. We would sit in the warm library and read and eventually the librarian took us on field trips to the northern beaches on the North Island. A couple times they took us abalone hunting. They had us over to their house often for dinner.

But the clock was ticking so we decided to move to the next country. Before we were done, we spent time in Fuji, in Tonga, and in Tahiti. In Fuji as we sat in the airport we realized that in the main terminal the ventilation was provided by holes high up in the walls. Thus at one point my partner put down her birth control pill so she could take it, and a large local bird landed on our table and promptly swallowed her pill.

We loved all the scooters in Tahiti. We landed there in the middle of the night. The local government officials walked through the planes with aerosol cans to disinfect and walked down the aisles spraying them. Then they sprayed our luggage; I was not excited about watching my soft guitar case get sprayed.

Finally, after a number of months we were scheduled to fly into Los Angeles. The last night in Tahiti we had a beautiful dinner but noticed some very rude tourists at the tables around us. They were American tourists and we discussed for a long time about cancelling our flights and going back to Australia. But we were both homesick.

It was one of the great adventures of our lives when we knew no matter what we tried, it would work. But guess what - that is how life works! Don't forget God is our co-pilot and has all the answers. There is a reason for every single step. Our only job is to take the step. What is your next step?
