I have never attended or read about a celebration of life service that doesn't surprise me. I read the celebration of life bio and realize how little I knew the person. I always find that there is spectacular parts of their journey that fill me with awe.
Recently I was in a Zoom meeting during which the attendees shared personal items in order to learn more about each other. I shared the fact that I had been a tennis pro earlier in my life and managed a huge tennis club in Northern California. I also threw in the fact that 8 hours of my weekly time was scheduled for playing tennis with the members of the club. It was required at part of my job! Every week!
Then a woman sitting next to me who I'd known for a number of years shared that early in her life she was the dance choreographer for The Mousekeeters. She taught Cubby and Annette and Tommy the dance moves.
This only serves to remind us that life is a journey filled with curves, with surprises, and with u-turns forward on God's path. It is the reminder that we all forget. We forget that we are always on the path. Yes, always on our path. So even in the midst of the heaviest challenge of our life when we're not even sure there is a path and everything is darkest - we're on God's path!
It only amplifies the truth that we are surrounded by the magnificence of the Divine here on Earth and we miss it. It is always about connection and communication. This is one of the gates into Divine experiences with other people.
It has been said that back at the beginning there was a moment when man had a conversation with God. God asked man what he wanted from life. Man replied "I want to be able to touch people in a special way and make a difference." God replied, "I grant you that but you will never know when or where it happens." Thus the truth is we don't know when or where it will happen. One of the things I always try to remember is at the moment I am sliding into a Divine moment I want to be fully present. I want to be in the now.
I've served as a prayer chaplain at our church for some 15 years and through the years prayed out loud with many people in many locations in many different circumstances. The moment sacred space is set between two people we move to the spiritual aspect and have the magic of really 'seeing' each other. In that moment, there is such a clarity between the two people and a sacred prayer emerges. It is the triangle of the prayer chaplain, the one requesting the prayer, and God. It means ;that even in a crowded room with people around there are just the two of you in a sacred magical pocket of a precious birthing miracle. This is where the good stuff really shows up. It happens to all of us in different ways and at different times. When it happens to you, surrender to it. Our ego can start to feel uncomfortable but the ego just gets in the way. Stay in the moment; it will feed us to such a deep level. This is the very time we find the depth of people and it will always surprise us. Do this connection so that when a celebration of life comes along you can realize that you were blessed to really know the person in a deeper way - because you asked!
It is a miracle to live a life on this planet. The spiritual being moves along and memories are made during the journey. We each show up and keep moving through the changes of life. So in the end there are so many different phases and chapters of the path. This is why the people we meet have a story that is unique, courageous, and filled with amazing experiences. Our job is not doing the journey alone; in that way we have the opportunity to learn about the people around us. Don't miss the chance! The stories are incredible and another way we touch into the WOW of life.
