Carrie

Updated: Nov 16, 2023

Today one of my dear friends sent me a link to an amazing singer songwriter I'd never heard of. Her name is Carrie Newcomer. I listened to a number of her songs and realized the lyrics from "Killing Me Softly with His Song" are true. Carrie has written my soul in her lyrics.

Her lyrics reached into the Divine heart of who I am and inspired me in a number of ways. Rachel and I listened to her song "Sanctuary" and realized it is our anthem.

The song states "Will you be my refuge/my haven in the storm/will you keep the embers warm/when my fire's all but gone? Will you remember/And bring me sprigs of rosemary/Be my sanctuary/'Til I can carry on." The lyrics speak to the relationship during my health challenges and speak to our commitment to each other.

Sometimes the lyrics just seem to touch a subject with a sweetness and understanding beyond measure. Another song lyric from her "Now in the season of come on home/Slowing my life to the speed of my soul." What a beautiful touching of the balance we seek to achieve in life no matter what the winds of chaos may bring to us.

One more I loved when she sang "Some answers don't come/But it's enough to ask." It is the truth that if we don't ask how will we know. A question unasked will never ever be answered. We can self-censor and avoid asking a question thinking there will not be an answer. But until we ask the question we will never know.

Finally she has a beautiful song called "Take More Time, Cover Less Ground." This is a great way to touch again on the truth that our job is to be awake. All of life is about slowing down. The faster we go the more we miss.

Mystic Dr. Jean Huston used to do a beautiful exercise. She explored the exercise of pouring a cup of tea. But she broke the entire process down to micro steps and during the exercise constantly pointed us into full consciousness and had us notice each facet of the process. How the arm flexes as it picks up the kettle of hot water. The movement of the kettle from the table to just over the cup. The slow pouring of the hot liquid to start the process of steeping the tea. It is a process that can be done in a very short period of time if we race through to get it done. Or it can be done in full consciousness and in the end so much more is clear. Much of our life's movement reflects this protocol of racing through to get to the other side. We become more connected to every level of the woven fabric of our world when we slow down and let it flow naturally. In doing so it becomes a meditation and a process of spiritual growth and spiritual practice. Take more time and cover less ground - watch what happens!
