Many times its something I hear that triggers an entire set of thoughts. Rachel watched a church service and was guided to write down the following quote, "We are responsible for every holy spark we did not ignite."
This is a beautiful call to arms. It is the obligation to be all that we have come here to be. Growing up, I realized that many times the message I got from the world was that I could do anything and be anything. Unfortunately that message did not come from my parents. Since it wasn't the message of the people raising me, I really did not believe I could do anything.
Then for a period of time I was a Boy Scout leader with a very active troop of young men. My group consisted of 8 young men striving to make a difference. I was able to see how easy it could be as a leader to shoot an arrow through any of their dreams with just a comment.
My job as a troop leader was to hold the sacred space not for just this scout or that scout but for each and every scout in our troop.
An Eagle project is the pinnacle of achievement in the badge program in the Boy Scouts. It must be designed by a member of the troop and involve the following 10 components prior to turning in the Eagle Scout rank application to the local council for approval. These are the requirements to qualify:
Be active in the troop for six months as a Life Scout;
Demonstrate following the Scout Oath and Scout Law;
Collect six references from important figures in your life;
Earn 21 Merit Badges;
Develop and give leadership to others in a service project with a pre-approved proposal;
Participate in a Scoutmaster conference;
Go before a Board of Review with a statment of purpose and specific presentation of the projec;t.
So in our troop of 8 we had seven Eagle scouts who went through the process. I learned how much a project we take on can set our life on fire.
What is it that floats your boat? What is something that you are participating in that causes all your nerve endings to tingle with excitement? If there is not something present, then you are not living the full life. It doesn't have to shake the world at large, only your portion of it. It may be serving a volunteer meal at a food bank near your house. It may be picking some form of non-profit and donating a few hours each week. It may be joining a nearby hospital to be someone who comes in and holds the newborfn premies so they have skin to skin contact with other humans.
There is a place for you in your community that will change your world. The journey of a thousand miles starts with one small step but the step must be taken. So look around and in some forgotten corner is the hazy definition that will lead you upward to another level of life. It will take movement so this week try somethiing new. Take a step that hasn't been taken before and see where it leads you!
