CATS

Cats are our familiars. In the middle ages, it was not all that safe to be a single woman and have a cat. But cats seem to fill a very unique postion in many of our lives.

It was said that in the beginning of time when the interaction started between animals and man the following happened. Dogs were adopted by man and were fed. The dogs looked at man and said, "They must be Gods!" However man domesticated cats and started feeding them and the cats looked at man and said, "Wow, I must be a God!" They have not changed their self perception since then.

I think that God has been using cats as special angelic envoys for human beings. Let me tell you a story. I talked to a friend today after a number of years. She and her partner are both allergic to cats and yet they have a cat. I asked how that happened. She said they came home one Christmas Eve with freezing temperatures and heavy snow. They pulled into the garage and when they turned off the car she noticed a set of eyes in the dark.

Now they live on an acre and the land is filled with possums, skunks, and all sorts of creatures that can get into garages. She carefully went over to the light switch and turned it on. When she turned around there was a tiny black kitten. The garage door when closed had a very small gap that the kitten had squeezed under. They thought they would take the kitten inside and let it stay a bit but they were not hopeful about its time. They had a possessive and territorial pit bull dog and he had been in the family for a number of years. They were apprehensive about the pit bull bullying or even hurting the cat. It only took a few days and then it happened. The cat immediatley began ruling the roost and negotiated a peace with the dog. The dog wandered around the house looking over his shoulder for the cat.

This cat has brought some spirituality in a different kind of way to the family. The reason I bring this up is because this is not a rare occurrance. I know many cases where cats have adoped people or places. We do not own a cat; they make the decision where they will live.

I believe God has a holding space for cats. This is a place where cats await their next assignment to bring God presence to another life or situation. It can happen anywhere at anytime.

The Ace Hardware store down the street is just another example. I've lived in the area for some twenty years and this store has a cat who lives in the store. On cold days, the cat snuggles on top of the warm cash register. On hot days, the cat curls up in the fan section of the store.

I have been blessed with some cats assigned to me from the heavenly cat waiting room that have changed my life. I have had friends whose connection to the planet in the end w;as their cat.

Thank you spirit for the amazing truth that no one ever owns a cat. Thank you spirit for the hope we all have that a cat will adopt us!
